Dental veneers are a cosmetic solution used to fix imperfections in your teeth. Here at Covington Family Dental, we provide several treatment options for all your cosmetic problems and veneers is one of the most common procedures in our office.
What are Dental Veneers?Veneers are a thin shell that is placed over your natural teeth to cover imperfections such as chips or cracks, and even discoloration. Sometimes we recommend veneers for patients who have uneven or misaligned teeth, gaps between their teeth or teeth that are worn.
As we age, it is normal for our teeth to feel the effects of everyday things such as eating, chewing, and drinking. Bad habits like smoking or drinking in excess can also affect the way in which our teeth look and impact our smile.
Am I a Candidate for Teeth Veneers? While teeth veneers are an excellent cosmetic option to fix dental imperfections, not everyone is a candidate to get them. You must meet specific requirements before you can get veneers including:• |
Having healthy gums and teeth. If you have gum disease or extensive decay, you may not be eligible to get veneers.
|
• |
Bruxism. If you have problems like clenching or grinding of the teeth, the veneers can get damaged.
|
• |
Strong enamel. We need to shave off some of the enamel before placing the veneer. If your enamel is worn, veneers are not for you. |
Getting Porcelain Teeth VeneersTo prepare your teeth for veneers, we must shave off some of the enamel. This step will help the shell fit properly and give it a natural look. We then take an impression of the teeth and choose a shade that matches your natural color.
The next step is when the impression is sent to the lab so that they can make your permanent veneers. We will send you home with a temporary set, so you can get used to wearing them. Once the veneers are ready, we bring you back in, and the new shells are placed on your teeth, shaped, and adjusted as needed before getting bonded permanently.
You may need additional appointments until the pieces feel comfortable in your mouth.
Getting Composite Resin Dental VeneersIf we choose composite resin veneers for you, there are several benefits: • |
Smaller amounts of enamel are removed
|
• |
Could be completed in one visit
|
• |
Cheaper than porcelain
|
• |
Easier to fix if damaged |
While composite veneers are more convenient and match your natural color and shape better, they are less durable than the porcelain kind. However, they can be easily repaired if needed.
Placing composite veneers on is easier as well, and our dentist creates the paste to match the color of your tooth. We use a laser to harden the material and bond it to the tooth permanently. Finally, the tooth is polished to give it the sheen of natural teeth. There is usually no need for follow up appointments to adjust the veneers.
Dental veneers are an excellent cosmetic option if you are concerned about how your smile looks to others. Please call Covington Family Dental at 253.499.6155 today for any questions about this solution. |
