Dentures are dental replacement options for some or all missing teeth. At Covington Family Dental we provide two choices depending on your situation, complete and partial dentures.

Once you decide this is the right option for your needs, we can review your oral health history and start you on a treatment plan.

Complete Dentures

We recommend complete dentures to patients who are missing all their upper or lower teeth. More than half the adult population in the United States is missing at least one tooth.

There are many replacement options to choose from, but dentures are still the most affordable for people who don’t have dental insurance.

There are two types of complete dentures:
•  Complete dentures. After all your teeth are removed, we will give you time to recover from the extraction surgery. This process can take between eight to twelve weeks and then you are ready to come back and get your permanent dentures.
•  Immediate dentures. These dentures are made in advance and can be placed immediately after the tooth extractions. One big drawback, in this case, is that gums change and shrink after teeth are extracted, and the dentures may not fit snugly after the healing process is complete. Immediate dentures may need multiple adjustments until you feel comfortable.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are a good option if a patient has one or more missing teeth, but still has natural teeth that are viable to anchor a bridge or partial. The replacement teeth are attached to a plastic base that is placed on top of the gums and matches their natural color.

Sometimes the base is supported by a metal clasp used to hold the denture in place during the day.

Getting Dentures

The entire process of getting dentures will take a few weeks and several appointments. Once you decide this is the right option for you, our dentist will get to work and take impressions of your teeth so that the lab can create the denture based on the shape of your teeth and mouth.

We also take measurements of the space in your jaw to create a model that you will try on multiple times to make sure it fits properly. Once you get a good fit for the model, the final denture is delivered and placed on your gums. At first, the dentures will feel strange until you get used to them. They may feel loose for a while, but this is normal. It may take some time to grow accustomed to taking the dentures in and out. Remember, the new dentures are a foreign object in your mouth, and there is always an adjustment period.

You should take your dentures off at night to give your gums a rest and avoid additional irritation. If you have any concerns about your new dentures or partials, don’t hesitate to let us know. You may need to come in often at first until everything is working as it should.
