Dental Crowns provided by in Covington, WA at

Dental crowns are the visible part of your tooth. When one of them is chipped or uneven, it can affect the way your smile looks.

At Covington Family Dental, we are always looking for ways to improve your smile and make you feel better about yourself.

We may need to replace a crown for health or cosmetic reasons. The procedure involves placing a cover or cap over a natural tooth to change its appearance and match it to the rest of your teeth.

Why Do I Need a Dental Crown?

There are several reasons why you may need a dental crown, including:
•  To repair a large cavity that cannot be filled
•  To replace a missing tooth that needs a dental bridge
•  For a dental implant
•  To protect a cracked or chipped tooth
•  After a root canal treatment
•  For cosmetic reasons

Types of Dental Crowns

A dental crown can be made of several different materials including metal alloys, composite resin, porcelain, ceramic or a combination of them that match your teeth's color. The crowns are usually made in an off-site lab using impressions taken at our dental office.

The type of dental crown used to fix your tooth will depend on several factors, including the tooth affected, the condition of the gum tissue, the color of your tooth, how much of the tooth shows when you smile, and how you use that tooth. If you are getting a crown for a molar, we need to use more durable materials to ensure that it lasts for a long time.

How Do You Place a Tooth Crown?

In most cases, you will need to come to the office twice. Sometimes, we can do everything in one visit, but this is not always the case. These are the steps that we must go through to add a crown:
•  Preparing the tooth for the procedure. This initial step is where our dentist removes any decay and gets the tooth ready for the crown. If there isn’t enough tooth structure to support a crown, we may need to enhance the tooth’s core.
•  Taking an impression, which will provide the lab with the exact specifications to create your new crown.
•  Place a temporary crown. The permanent crown will be ready in a couple of weeks, but in the meantime, we need to protect your tooth with a temporary crown. This will also allow you to eat and speak normally while you wait.
•  Place the permanent crown. Once you and our dentists approve everything, then it’s time to cement the permanent crown. Before completing this step, you must let us know if you are not happy with the final product. Once we add the crown, it’s too late.

Dental crowns should last you for a very long time with proper care. Brushing and flossing like you do your natural teeth, keeping your regular checkups, and avoiding chewing on hard foods will help to extend the life of your new crown.
